Tomorrow we’re heading out for a family road trip west. First South Dakota and Mount Rushmore, then south to Denver to visit my brother.
It’ll all be tied neatly with a bright shiny ribbon at Red Rocks Amphitheater next Friday for an Avett Brothers show, which was the original impetus for this vacation. Big-time Bucket List item.
I’m insanely excited. And I chose the word “insanely” deliberately; I might be just a bit too excited.
This is our first family vacation since our last one so abruptly and tragically ended with my mom’s death, this past March. When the universe, pardon my French, fucked me over.
If I let myself stop and really think about it, there is a very real, painful, deep-rooted fear rolling around. I’m pretty damn gun-shy.
The wound is still very raw. This trip could either help it heal or open it right up.
But I am going full-speed ahead. With fingers crossed.
